Reaching New Heights

The 29th May marked the 60th anniversary of the successful attempt of Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay climbing Mount Everest. Since then, many have scaled the summit, but this first conquest is remembered as it was reaching a new height of achievement. A significant factor in the failure of previous attempts was frostbite, so for this attempt, an innovative high-altitude boot was specifically designed. The boot weighed just 1.9 kilograms and was tested in the French Alps before the expedition. The boots were worn by all members of the party who went above 6,100 metres and not one member of the team suffered frostbite. (SHP News) This was a technological innovation that reduced the health risk and increased the chances of achieving the primary objective. Today, further technical innovations have led to electrically heated boots and climbing equipment that is much lighter and more reliable. BBC News Innovation helps us to achieve new heights of achievement in adventure, sport and business. At Arinite we are passionate about innovative thinking. Examples of the steps we have taken so far include:
  • Providing documentation and information that is accurate, clear and concise.
  • The replacement of paper-based products with electronic information.
  • The development of information that can be used and viewed on a wide range of hand-held devices.
On May 23rd Yuichiro Miura became the first 80 year old to reach the top of Everest. Although he had reached the peak previously, at the age of 70 and 75, this is still a huge achievement. He scaled the peak with his physician son Gota Miura (both pictured). Furthermore, he broke his hip two years ago and underwent heart surgery in January 2013. CNN News This highlights both the advances in medical technology to allow people to do more for longer, together with the fact that people are generally more active in older age. This is reflected in the changing workforce demographics which have potential implications for health, safety and welfare at work. At Arinite we follow and embrace such changes to ensure that our services are relevant to the needs of our clients.
