The 29th May marked the 60th anniversary of the successful attempt of Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay climbing Mount Everest. Since then, many have scaled the summit, but this first conquest is remembered as it was reaching a new height of achievement.
A significant factor in the failure of previous attempts was frostbite, so for this attempt, an innovative high-altitude boot was specifically designed. The boot weighed just 1.9 kilograms and was tested in the French Alps before the expedition. The boots were worn by all members of the party who went above 6,100 metres and not one member of the team suffered frostbite. (SHP News) This was a technological innovation that reduced the health risk and increased the chances of achieving the primary objective.
Today, further technical innovations have led to electrically heated boots and climbing equipment that is much lighter and more reliable. BBC News
