Route one: display the approved poster, the HSE's health and safety law poster, in a readable condition, in a place where workers can easily see it. Route two: give each worker the equivalent approved leaflet or pocket card instead. Either route satisfies the law in full; doing neither is the breach. That either/or is the single most misunderstood fact about this duty, because the poster industry understandably talks about route one and rarely mentions route two.

Which route fits which business

For a conventional workplace with walls and a workforce that passes them, the poster is the simpler answer: one purchase, one spot by the kitchen or clock-in point, done. It must be the genuine approved article, HSE-published or from a licensed supplier, and it must stay legible and visible, a faded poster behind a filing cabinet is a poster in name only.

Route two earns its keep where walls do not: remote and hybrid teams, field-based staff, businesses with no premises at all, and workforces spread thin across sites. Here is the detail with teeth. The poster was redesigned in 2009, and after a transition period the old 1999 version ceased to satisfy the law: since April 2014, only the current version counts. A surprising number of workplaces still display the old design in good faith, and every one of them is technically non-compliant while feeling entirely covered, which is this duty's version of the pattern that runs through all of health and safety: the difference between having done something once and the thing being currently true.
