Good firm – bad firm

What kinds of companies do you think of who have a poor health & safety record? Do they
tend to be generally smaller companies possibly run by a self-made owner more
concerned about making a quick buck than ensuring the protection of their workforce or
the environment?
Conversely, what kind of company would you expect to display a good H&S record? Do
you normally think of larger well-resourced organisations – possibly a global organisation -
run by well-seasoned, experienced managers, properly regulated with mature processes in
place?

Whom would you trust?

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to pick-and-choose between prospective
employers. If you live on the poverty line in an under-developed country, you will often
grab whatever job comes along, even if it means long hours and low-grade work for the
sort of outfit mentioned above.

What, however, if you live in the developed world, and have more choice about whom you
work for?

One year ago, the UK’s Labour Force Survey stated that: “For the first time since records
began, there are fewer [UK] unemployed people than job vacancies.” Other countries
appear to be booming, too, so employers need to work harder to attract and retain high-
calibre workers who will add value to their business.

Silicon Valley perhaps leads the way in offering extravagant perks to recruit the best
workers from around the world. Out with staff canteens, and in with catered meals. On-
site gyms/wellness centres are taken for granted. Shops, hairdressers, dry-cleaning
services? Just down the corridor! Travel perks? Where would you like to go?

High standards taken for granted

Needless to say, workers in affluent countries will not tolerate the risks to health or safety
that their forebears might have tolerated. How then, do you convince potential employees
that your standards pass muster?

Get your health & safety management system verified! Arinite’s June 2019 Blog argued
the case for H&S audits. Better still, it suggested applying for an external audit such as ISO
45001, since anyone can blow their own trumpet: proper governance requires impartial,
external oversight. This is the evidence for your stakeholders – employees, customers,
shareholders – that you are a mature organisation which takes its responsibilities
seriously.

Jet2holidays has said it has become the only UK tour operator to be awarded certification
for the world’s first international standard for occupational health and safety (ISO 45001:
2018).

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for occupational health and safety
management systems (OHSMS). It provides a framework and guidelines for organisations
to establish, implement, maintain, and improve their occupational health and safety
practices. The standard was developed by the International Organisation for
Standardisation (ISO) and replaces the previous standard OHSAS 18001.

ISO 45001:2018 is designed to help organisations of all sizes, in any industry, to manage
their occupational health and safety risks and improve the overall well-being of their
employees. It sets out the criteria for an effective OHSMS, focusing on proactive
approaches to hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control.

By implementing ISO 45001:2018, organisations can demonstrate their commitment to
employee health and safety, reduce workplace accidents and injuries, improve legal
compliance, and enhance their reputation with stakeholders. It provides a systematic
approach to managing occupational health and safety, helping organisations create safer
and healthier work environments.
