Health and Safety Consultants inCanada

Provincial OHS compliance · Canada Labour Code support · Risk assessments · Joint committee guidance · DSE and ergonomics · Support in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and Ottawa

Canada's workplace safety system is defined by its jurisdictional split. Most employers fall under the occupational health and safety legislation of the province or territory in which they operate, while federally regulated industries fall under the Canada Labour Code. For UK and international groups, the most common mistake is treating Canada as a single jurisdiction. Arinite provides Qualified consultants and compliance software to businesses in Canada, coordinating the relevant provincial and federal obligations with a single group compliance standard across 50+ countries.

ABOUT

Workplace Health and
Safety in Canada

Canada does not have a single national workplace safety statute. Instead, jurisdiction determines which law applies:

Provincial and territorial OHS legislation

Most workplaces are regulated provincially, for example Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act, British Columbia's regime administered by WorkSafeBC, Quebec's regime administered by the CNESST, and Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act. Each has its own duties and regulations.

The Canada Labour Code, Part II

Federally regulated workplaces (such as banking, telecommunications, interprovincial transport, and federal Crown corporations) fall under Part II of the Canada Labour Code, administered by the federal Labour Program.

The internal responsibility system

Canadian OHS is built on the internal responsibility system, under which everyone in the workplace shares responsibility for safety according to their role.

Joint health and safety committees

Most jurisdictions require joint committees or representatives once employee thresholds are met.

Due diligence

The due diligence defence is central to Canadian OHS enforcement, making documented systems and records particularly important.

Arinite supports businesses operating in Canada, with particular strength for UK and international groups whose Canadian operations must meet the correct provincial or federal regime while staying consistent with a single group compliance system. We work with locally qualified practitioners, including French-language support for operations in Quebec.
