European Week for Safety and Health at Work 2023
The European Week for Safety and Health at Work is an annual campaign organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). Its primary purpose is to raise awareness and promote the importance of workplace safety and health across Europe. This event typically takes place during the last week of October (this year 23rd to 27th) and is part of the broader European strategy to improve safety and health conditions in workplaces.
The European Week for Safety and Health at Work serves several key purposes:

· Innovation: It promotes innovation in safety and health technologies, practices, and solutions. This innovation can lead to the development of new tools and strategies for preventing accidents and illnesses in the workplace.
· Reducing Workplace Incidents: Ultimately, the main purpose is to reduce workplace accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses. By increasing awareness and promoting preventive measures, the European Week for Safety and Health at Work aims to contribute to the overall well-being of workers and the sustainability of businesses.
How to support the 2023 theme
Each year sees a different theme, this year’s being: “Safe and healthy work in the digital age”. What can your organisation do? Here are some thought-starters:
· Remote Work Policies: If your organisation offers homeworking, establish clear remote work policies that outline expectations, communication guidelines, and security protocols. Ensure that remote employees have the necessary tools and support to work safely and effectively
· Ergonomics: Train DSE risk assessors. Provide ergonomic workstations and equipment to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Encourage employees to maintain proper posture, take regular breaks, and use ergonomic accessories such as adjustable chairs, standing desks, and ergonomic keyboards and mice.
· Work-Life Balance: Promote work-life balance by setting clear boundaries between work and personal life. Encourage employees to establish regular work hours, take scheduled breaks, and avoid overworking.
· Mental Health Support: Recognise the importance of mental health in the digital age. Offer mental health resources, such as employee assistance programmes, counselling services, and stress management workshops. Encourage open conversations about mental health to reduce stigma.
· Training and Education: Provide training on digital safety and security. Teach employees how to recognise and respond to cybersecurity threats, phishing attacks, and other digital risks. Regularly update this training to stay current with evolving threats.
· Data Privacy: Emphasise the importance of data privacy and protection. Implement strong data security measures, including encryption, secure access controls, and regular data audits. Ensure compliance with relevant data protection regulations, such as GDPR.
· Physical Health Initiatives: Promote physical well-being through initiatives like fitness programmes, health screenings, and access to gym facilities or fitness apps. Encourage employees to maintain an active lifestyle and provide resources for healthy eating.
· Flexible Work Arrangements: Offer flexible work arrangements, such as flexitime or compressed workweeks, to accommodate employees' needs and preferences. This can help reduce stress and improve work-life balance.
· Communication: Foster clear and open communication channels. Encourage employees to speak up about any safety or health concerns. Use digital tools like instant messaging, video conferencing, and email for effective communication.
· Regular Assessments: Conduct regular assessments of workplace safety and health. Encourage feedback from employees through surveys or focus groups to identify areas of improvement. Use this feedback to make necessary adjustments.
· Tech Support: Provide technical support for digital tools and equipment. Ensure that employees have access to IT helpdesk services to address any technical issues promptly.
· Leadership and Culture: Promote a culture of safety and well-being from top to bottom. Lead by example, and ensure that leaders prioritise the health and safety of their teams.
· Emergency Response: Establish clear protocols for responding to digital emergencies, such as cybersecurity breaches or data leaks. Train employees on how to report incidents and take appropriate action.
· Legal Compliance: Stay up-to-date with labour laws and regulations related to workplace safety and health. Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, and adapt your policies as needed.
· Continuous Improvement: Continuously monitor and assess the effectiveness of your safety and health initiatives. Be prepared to adapt and improve your strategies as technology and work practices evolve.
