The importance of health and safety inspections in the workplace

I was reminded about the importance of safety inspections looking at hazards and observing people’s behaviours during a visit to a client’s office recently.
During the safety tour we spotted a potential ‘height hazard’ that people walked past unnoticed on a daily basis and were able to report this the Facilities Management team for action.
Following the tour, I recalled an incident I was involved in at a call centre, where a ‘trapping hazard’ also went unnoticed following a change in work practices, this resulted in an employee fracturing their arm in seven places, because safety inspections did not focus on ‘changes’ in a work practice.
During a fuel crisis, a sliding access gate was closed all day which was a significant change for access to the building.
Now to access the building, call centre employees had to use a call button, located on the outside of the gate to attract attention of the security guard to open the gate.
On the day of the accident, a group of employees were leaving the building and finding the gate closed, one of them reached through the gate to press the call button on the outside. Almost simultaneously, someone inside the building opened the gate causing the crush injuries to the employee’s arm and resulting in a major RIDDOR injury.
Preventing Accidents & Injuries
The events of that day demonstrate one of the key reasons why regular safety inspections, are important in the prevention of accidents and injuries. By systematically identifying potential hazards in the workplace, these inspections enable proactive measures to mitigate risks before accidents occur. Whether it's a slippery floor, faulty equipment, change in work process or inadequate safety protocols, early detection through inspections can prevent injuries or damage, and protect the well-being of employees and visitors alike.
Legal Compliance
Businesses operate within a framework of laws and regulations governing health and safety standards. Health and safety inspections are not just recommended but often mandated by regulatory authorities. Compliance with these regulations isn't merely a matter of avoiding fines or legal penalties; it's about upholding a commitment to employee welfare and adhering to ethical business practices. HSE provide guidance and resources to assist with legal compliance and can be found on their website using this link.
With the advent of technology there are many APPS used in conjunction with mobile devices, that record H&S inspections or audits, and these often have the advantage of tracking remedial actions that are raised. Arinite have been assisting our customers with health and safety inspections and audits for some time, and we have various ways to help clients record these as well as supporting them in the workplace. Reducing Cost
Beyond the human suffering, workplace accidents and injuries can exact a significant financial cost on businesses. Medical expenses, compensation claims, and productivity losses can all add up. Health and safety inspections provide a proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential hazards, thereby reducing the risk of incidents and their associated costs.
Enhancing Reputation
A strong health and safety record is a testament to a company's commitment to responsible business practices. It enhances the organization's reputation among employees, customers, investors, and the broader community. By prioritising health and safety through regular inspections, businesses not only fulfil their moral obligation but also bolster their standing as a trustworthy and socially responsible company.
Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
Health and safety inspections are not merely about ticking boxes; they're about continuous improvement. By regularly reviewing and assessing workplace conditions, businesses can identify areas where health and safety procedures can be enhanced. This proactive approach ensures that organisations stay ahead of emerging risks and challenges, fostering a culture of safety and well-being.
Conclusion
In conclusion, health and safety inspections are indispensable tools for safeguarding employees, ensuring legal compliance, reducing costs, and enhancing productivity and reputation. By prioritising these inspections, businesses demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of their most valuable asset—their workforce.
