The importance of health and safety inspections in the workplace
I was reminded about the importance of safety inspections looking at hazards and observing people’s behaviours during a visit to a client’s office recently.
During the safety tour we spotted a potential ‘height hazard’ that people walked past unnoticed on a daily basis and were able to report this the Facilities Management team for action.
Following the tour, I recalled an incident I was involved in at a call centre, where a ‘trapping hazard’ also went unnoticed following a change in work practices, this resulted in an employee fracturing their arm in seven places, because safety inspections did not focus on ‘changes’ in a work practice.
During a fuel crisis, a sliding access gate was closed all day which was a significant change for access to the building.
Now to access the building, call centre employees had to use a call button, located on the outside of the gate to attract attention of the security guard to open the gate.
On the day of the accident, a group of employees were leaving the building and finding the gate closed, one of them reached through the gate to press the call button on the outside. Almost simultaneously, someone inside the building opened the gate causing the crush injuries to the employee’s arm and resulting in a major RIDDOR injury.
